The FTA will fast-track India’s goal of reaching $52 billion in exports of gems and jewellery by 2022-23

  • Large Turnout of visitors from Southern States
  • Participants report excellent business
  • 7th Edition to take place in September 22-24, 2022

Chennai, March 28: The Akshaya Tritiya edition of Gem and Jewellery India International Fair (GJIIF) 2022 held at Chennai Trade Centre from March 25-27, 2022 concluded on a highly positive note with an extraordinary turnout on all three days despite the challenges of tough market conditions and a fairly crowded B2B trade fair calendar. Visitors thronged the halls throughout, and almost all participants reported that business was excellent and far exceeded their expectations

The three-day show was organised by The Jewellers & Diamond Traders Association, Madras (MJDTA) and the Tamil Nadu Jewellers’ Federation (TNJF). GJIIF is the premier B2B show exclusively for South Indian jewellery and among the topmost events in India’s G&J trade fair calendar.

At the inauguration, Chief Guest, Hon’ble Minister of Water Resources, Govt of Tamilnadu Shri Durai Murugan congratulated the organisers and expressed the confidence that such events would aid the industry as it returned to normal operations after the disruptions of the past two years.

Buoyed by the enthusiastic response from the trade, Mr Jayantilal Challani, Convener, GJIIF and president of MJDTA credited the efforts put in by the organisers in the weeks prior to the show. “The success of the show is on the one hand an indication that GJIIF has now consolidated itself with a sizable base due to the efforts in earlier years, and on the other, a result of the massive campaign taken up in the weeks before the show.”

GJIIF focused this time on the Southern market, “We targeted a new audience – jewellers from every corner of the state. Teams of committee members visited every small town and large rural clusters and even did door-to-door campaigns and on the spot registrations. The results are obvious,” Challani said.

Mr A S Sriram, President of TNJF, also observed that the fair surpassed expectations of most participants. “Besides the regular visitors from the large retailers and chain store buyers, the jewellers from the southern states, came in large numbers. We understand that in addition to the regular business from the South, many buyers have received orders from new contacts and established a network for the future. The impact has been immensely positive for the trade.”

Many of the exhibitors and visitors provided positive feedback about the excellent results. Mr Ashok Kumar Jain, Director, Laxmi Jewellery Chennai Pvt Ltd said, “The March edition of the Chennai show is always very special. We have been participating in shows here for over 15 years and this is a great opportunity: the start of a new financial year coinciding with one of biggest jewellery buying occasions in the South.”

Another exhibitor, Mr Rajendra Jain, of Padmavati Chains, said, “We were a bit apprehensive before coming due to the high gold rates and events across the globe. But, once the show has begun, it is really quite different. Overall, the turnout has been good.”

The show was also welcomed by visitors. Mr. Mohan Rao from Chandana Brothers, who has chain of jewellery stores in Andhra Pradesh, said that his aim of meeting many members of the South Indian trade was fulfilled. “I have not only contacted existing vendors, but also developed many contacts useful for our expansion plans.”

On a similar note, Mr Senthil of Silver Kingdom Pvt Ltd said, “We are happy that we have made the trip to Chennai this year. For us particularly, being into silver jewellery, there was a lot to be gained. Everything we need was there. It was good that we decided to come.”

Mr. Manoj VK, Project Director of United Exhibitions, the show managers, said, “We are overwhelmed by the response that the show generated. Almost all Exhibitors reported that they had surpassed their targets and expectations. Our team has worked hard to shape up the show to this level which has finally brought out an inclusive output and we will aim to take the show to deliver another great experience for all in the latter part of the year.”

Following the successful conclusion, MJDTA and TNJF have finalised the dates for the September show. “Our festive edition, the 7th GJIIF – Festive Edition will take place from September 22nd to 24th , 2022 at the same venue. We invite all of you to participate and build your business even further during the festival season in the last few months of this calendar year.”
